How to Inspect a Used Boat Before Purchase

Inspecting a used boat before purchase is the single most important step in the buying process. A thorough inspection can reveal hidden problems that would cost thousands to fix — or confirm that the boat is sound and worth the asking price. This guide is a physical walkthrough, area by area, so you know exactly what to check when you go to view a boat.

Before you go: preparation

A good inspection starts before you reach the boat:

  • Bring the right tools: Flashlight, moisture meter (for checking deck core), small mirror (for seeing behind engines), screwdriver (for probing soft spots), camera/phone for photos, and a notepad.
  • Research the model: Look up known issues for the specific boat model. Owner forums are invaluable — they will tell you exactly what tends to fail.
  • Check the listing details: Compare what the listing claims with what you see. Discrepancies are red flags.
  • Arrange a sea trial: Insist on a sea trial. A boat that looks fine on land can have serious problems underway.

1. Hull inspection

Start with the hull — it is the structural foundation of the boat.

Gelcoat and finish

  • Look for hairline cracks (crazing) in the gelcoat — common and usually cosmetic, but extensive crazing may indicate structural flex.
  • Check for blisters (osmosis) below the waterline. Small blisters are common on older boats; extensive blistering requires professional treatment (€3,000 to €10,000).
  • Look for previous repair marks — areas where the gelcoat colour does not match or the surface is uneven. Repairs are not necessarily a deal breaker, but undisclosed repairs are a red flag.

Structural integrity

  • Tap the hull with a plastic mallet or coin. A solid sound indicates good laminate; a dull thud may indicate delamination or voids.
  • Inspect the keel area for grounding damage — cracks, repairs, or misalignment.
  • Check the hull-to-deck joint — look for separation, uneven gaps, or signs of re-bedding.
  • On sailboats, inspect the keel bolts (if visible inside) for corrosion or movement.

2. Deck and superstructure

  • Walk the entire deck: Feel for soft spots. A spongy deck indicates water intrusion into the core — a serious and expensive problem. Use a moisture meter if available.
  • Check all through-hull fittings: Look for corrosion, cracks, or loose fittings. Each should have a seacock that operates smoothly.
  • Inspect stanchions and lifelines: Check for loose bases, which indicate deck core damage from water intrusion.
  • Check hatches and portlights: Look for water stains around the edges — signs of leaks. Open and close each one to check operation.
  • Inspect the rub rail: Damage may indicate collisions or rough docking.

3. Engine inspection

The engine is the most expensive component to replace. A careful inspection is critical.

Visual checks

  • Oil: Pull the dipstick. Oil should be amber to dark brown, not milky (milky oil indicates water intrusion — a major problem). Check for metal shavings on the dipstick.
  • Coolant: Should be clean and coloured (green, pink, or orange). Rusty or oily coolant indicates a possible head gasket issue.
  • Belts: Check for cracks, fraying, or glazing. Worn belts suggest deferred maintenance.
  • Exhaust manifolds: Look for rust, corrosion, or water traces — signs of leaking or failing manifolds.
  • Engine mounts: Check for cracked or compressed rubber. Failed mounts cause vibration and alignment problems.
  • Corrosion: Excessive corrosion on a freshwater-cooled engine suggests saltwater use without proper flushing.

Running checks (on the hard or at dock)

  • Start the engine and listen. It should start promptly (within a few seconds) and idle smoothly. Excessive smoke is a concern — blue smoke (oil burning), white smoke (coolant leak), black smoke (overfueling).
  • Check for vibrations at idle and at various RPMs.
  • Verify that the temperature stabilises within the normal range (160 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit for most marine engines).
  • Check the alternator output — should show 13.5 to 14.5 volts.

4. Interior and cabin

  • Smell: A musty smell indicates dampness or leaks. A strong fuel smell may indicate a fuel system leak.
  • Headliner: Check for water stains, sagging, or delamination — all signs of deck or window leaks.
  • Cabin sole (floor): Walk the entire cabin. Feel for soft spots, which indicate water intrusion into the plywood core.
  • Upholstery: Check for mildew, UV damage, and seam failure. Replacing cockpit upholstery costs €500 to €2,000.
  • Bilge: Check the bilge for water (some is normal), oil (engine leak), or antifreeze (coolant leak). The bilge pump should operate automatically and manually.

5. Electrical system

  • Battery: Check terminal condition (corrosion), battery age, and hold-down security. Test voltage — should be 12.6V or higher when fully charged.
  • Wiring: Look for corrosion on terminals, non-marine wire (automotive wire corrodes quickly in marine environments), and amateur splices. Tangled, messy wiring is a sign of poor maintenance.
  • Switches and panels: Test every switch. Non-working switches or breakers that trip indicate wiring problems.
  • Navigation lights: Test all-round light, port (red), starboard (green), and stern (white) lights.

6. Plumbing and water systems

  • Freshwater system: Run all taps. Check for leaks under sinks and at connections. Water should flow without odour.
  • Marine toilet: Test the flush mechanism. Check for leaks and odour. A holding tank that has not been pumped out will smell.
  • Bilge pumps: Test both automatic and manual operation. Pour a bucket of water in the bilge and verify the pump activates.

7. Sea trial

The sea trial is where you discover problems that are invisible on land. A 30 to 60 minute sea trial should cover:

  • Cold start: The engine should start promptly from cold. Hard starting may indicate compression issues or fuel system problems.
  • Idle through no-wake zone: Check for smooth idle, no stalling, and responsive steering.
  • Acceleration: Bring the boat up to planing speed. Note how long it takes to plane — sluggish planing may indicate an underpowered or overloaded boat, or a fouled bottom.
  • Cruising speed: Run at cruising RPM for 10 to 15 minutes. Monitor engine temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. All should remain stable.
  • Top speed: Briefly run at full throttle. Note the maximum RPM — if it is significantly below the engine's rated WOT range, the propeller may be wrong or the engine may be underperforming.
  • Turning: Test turning in both directions. The boat should turn predictably without excessive lean or cavitation.
  • Reverse: Test reverse gear engagement and stopping power.
  • Listen: Throughout the sea trial, listen for unusual noises — knocking, grinding, or whining from the engine or transmission.

Red flags — when to walk away

  • Milky oil (water in the engine) — major engine problem
  • Soft, spongy deck sections — core delamination
  • Engine overheats during the sea trial
  • Excessive smoke (any colour) at any RPM
  • Significant hull blisters below the waterline
  • Keel damage or misalignment on sailboats
  • Amateur electrical wiring throughout the boat
  • Seller refuses a sea trial or independent survey
  • Title or registration documents do not match the seller's name
  • Price dramatically below market value with no explanation
