Anchoring is one of the most important seamanship skills a boater can master. Whether stopping for lunch, waiting for a bridge opening, or spending the night in a quiet cove, the ability to anchor securely and confidently is essential for safe boating. Ground tackle — the collective term for the anchor, chain, rope rode, and associated hardware — is the system that holds a boat in place, and understanding how each component works together is the foundation of good anchoring practice. Anchor types and their characteristics

No single anchor works perfectly in all conditions, so the choice depends on the boat, the typical cruising area, and the bottom types encountered. The most common recreational anchor types are:

Rode selection: chain and rope

The rode is the line connecting the anchor to the boat, and its composition directly affects holding power. A all-chain rode provides the best holding because the chain's weight creates a horizontal pull on the anchor, but it is heavy and requires a windlass for practical handling on boats over 30 feet. A chain-and-rope combination — typically 5 to 10 metres of chain spliced to nylon rope — is the most common setup for cruising boats, offering a balance of holding power and weight.

Chain size should match the boat's displacement and the anchor manufacturer's recommendations. For a typical 35-foot cruising sailboat, 8 mm chain is standard; for a 45-foot boat, 10 mm is appropriate. The rope portion should be nylon, which stretches under load and absorbs shock, reducing the peak force on the anchor. Three-strand nylon is the most common choice, though braided nylon is quieter and easier to handle. The rope should be sized to match or exceed the chain's breaking strength.

Scope: the critical ratio

Scope is the ratio of rode length to water depth (including the height from the waterline to the bow roller). It is the single most important factor in anchoring security, because it determines the angle at which the rode pulls on the anchor. A low angle — close to horizontal — allows the anchor to dig in and hold; a high angle pulls the anchor upward and causes it to drag.

The minimum recommended scope for an overnight stay is 5:1, with 7:1 preferred in exposed anchorages or when wind is expected. In storm conditions, scope should be increased to 10:1 if swinging room allows. With an all-chain rode, slightly less scope is needed because the chain's weight maintains a horizontal pull, but the difference is modest and should not be relied upon in strong wind.

Setting the anchor

The procedure for setting an anchor is the same regardless of anchor type, though the feel differs. The standard approach is:

  1. Approach the anchorage from downwind or downcurrent, and identify a spot with adequate swinging room for the expected wind direction.
  2. Stop the boat with the bow into the wind or current, and lower the anchor to the bottom — do not throw or drop it, as this can foul the flukes.
  3. Let the boat drift backward while paying out rode to the desired scope. Avoid piling chain on top of the anchor.
  4. Once the full scope is out, snub the rode briefly on a cleat to pull the anchor sideways and begin the setting process.
  5. Put the engine in slow reverse and gradually increase to half speed. Watch a range bearing on shore — if the boat moves backward, the anchor is dragging and should be reset.
  6. Once the anchor holds, confirm the set by checking that the rode goes taut and the boat stops moving. Note the depth and scope for reference.

A new-generation anchor typically sets within a boat length or two. Traditional plow anchors may take longer and may need to be re-approached if they skip along the bottom. Anchoring in different bottom types

Bottom type has a significant effect on holding power. Sand and firm mud provide the most reliable holding for most anchor types. Soft mud can be problematic for plow anchors, which may skip along the surface; fluke anchors and new-generation designs with sharp flukes tend to penetrate soft mud better. Grass and weed are challenging for all anchors, as the vegetation prevents the flukes from penetrating — a sharp, heavy anchor driven in with engine power may eventually cut through, but in dense grass, re-anchoring in a different spot is often the better option. Rock and coral provide holding only if the anchor can hook into a crevice, which is unreliable and can damage both the anchor and the seabed.

Anchor watch and safety

Even with a well-set anchor, an anchor watch is essential. The minimum practice is to take a range bearing on two fixed objects ashore before retiring for the night, and to check them periodically. Many boaters set a GPS anchor alarm on their chart plotter, which sounds an alert if the boat moves outside a defined radius. The alarm radius should account for the boat's swinging circle, which is the distance from the anchor to the bow plus the rode length.

When wind or current is expected to shift, the boat will swing around the anchor, and the swinging circle must be clear of other boats, rocks, and shallow water. In a crowded anchorage, using a shorter scope reduces the swinging circle but also reduces holding power — a trade-off that requires judgement. Retrieving the anchor

To retrieve the anchor, motor slowly forward toward the anchor while taking in the rode. Do not use the windlass to pull the boat forward — the windlass is designed to lift the chain, not to drag the boat. Once the rode is vertical, the anchor should break free; if it does not, motor slowly in a circle around the anchor point to lever it out. Persistent stuck anchors can sometimes be freed by tying the rode to a bow cleat and motoring slowly forward until the anchor releases, but this should be done with care to avoid damaging the cleat or deck hardware.

Once the anchor is on the surface, rinse it with fresh water if possible, and inspect the shank, flukes, and swivel for damage before stowing.
