Night boating is a fundamentally different experience from daytime operation. Visibility is reduced, depth perception is impaired, and the water that was familiar in daylight becomes disorienting after dark. Yet many boaters will find themselves operating at night — returning from a late dinner, catching an early ferry, or making a passage. This guide covers the preparation, equipment, and procedures that make night boating safe.
Navigation lights: the legal minimum
Navigation lights are not optional — they are required by international COLREGs (Collision Regulations) for all vessels operating between sunset and sunrise, and in restricted visibility. The basic rules:
- Power-driven vessels under 12 metres: white masthead light, white stern light, and red/green sidelights. Many small boats use an all-round white light instead of separate masthead and stern lights.
- Sailing vessels under 12 metres: red/green sidelights and a white stern light. A tricolour light at the masthead combining all three is permitted for sailing vessels under 12 metres.
- Vessels at anchor: an all-round white light visible from 360 degrees. Vessels under 7 metres need only a single white light.
- Rowing vessels and padd craft: an all-round white light or torch.
Check all navigation lights before departing. A failed bulb at night is both illegal and dangerous. Carry spare bulbs and check that sidelights are not obscured by sails, fenders, or dinghies on deck.
Preparing for night operation
Preserve your night vision
The human eye takes 20-30 minutes to fully adapt to darkness. White light destroys this adaptation instantly. Use red lights for chart tables, cabin lighting, and instrument illumination — red light preserves night vision while still allowing you to read instruments and charts. Dim all screens to the minimum readable level and use red screen filters on phones and tablets where possible.
Brief the crew
Before departing in darkness, brief everyone on board about the plan, the route, and the watch schedule. Assign clear roles — who is helming, who is on lookout, who handles lines. Night operations are not the time for improvisation. Ensure everyone knows where the lifejackets, flares, and VHF radio are located.
File a float plan
Tell someone on shore where you are going, your planned route, and your expected arrival time. If you do not arrive as planned, they can alert the coast guard. This is good practice for all boating but essential for night operations.
Watchkeeping and lookout
COLREGs require a proper lookout at all times. At night, this means actively scanning the horizon, not just relying on instruments. The human eye can detect unlit hazards — rocks, floating debris, small boats — that radar and AIS may miss. Rotate the watch every 2-3 hours on longer passages to prevent fatigue, which is the leading cause of night-time accidents.
Maintain a slower speed at night than in daylight. The stopping distance and reaction time are both longer when visibility is reduced. A common rule of thumb is to reduce speed to a level where you can stop within half the visible distance.
Using radar at night
Radar is one of the most valuable tools for night boating. It detects other vessels, coastline, and navigation marks regardless of visibility. Learn to interpret radar returns before you need it — practice in daylight with the radar on, comparing the screen to what you see visually. Set the guard zone alarm to alert you to contacts entering a defined radius around your boat.
Radar does have limitations. Small fibreglass or wooden boats may produce weak returns, and sea clutter can mask nearby targets in rough conditions. Use radar in conjunction with AIS and visual lookout, not as a replacement.
AIS (Automatic Identification System)
AIS broadcasts your vessel's position, course, and speed to other vessels and displays their information on your chart plotter. It is invaluable at night for identifying commercial vessels, their speed, and their heading. Identifying other vessels at night
At night, you identify other vessels by their light configurations. Learning to read these lights is an essential skill:
- White light above red/green: Power-driven vessel approaching. The relative position of red (port) or green (starboard) tells you which side you are seeing.
- Red over green: Sailing vessel under sail.
- White light only, moving: Vessel under 7 metres or a vessel being towed.
- Two red lights in vertical line: Vessel not under command — give way.
- Three lights in vertical line (red-white-red):Restricted manoeuvrability — give way.
- Green over white: Trawler fishing — give way.
- Red over red: Vessel aground — keep clear.
Common night boating hazards
Beyond reduced visibility, night boating presents specific hazards:
- Floating debris: Logs, containers, and fishing gear are nearly invisible at night. Reduce speed in areas known for debris, particularly after storms.
- Unlit markers: Some navigation marks may have failed lights. Do not rely solely on lighted marks — use GPS and chart plotter to confirm position.
- Fishing vessels: Small fishing boats may show only a single white light and can be difficult to see. Watch for their nets and longlines, which may extend far from the vessel.
- Fatigue: Night operations are mentally taxing. Recognise the signs of fatigue — yawning, slow reactions, difficulty focusing — and hand over the watch.
