Used Benetti superyachts for sale represent a significant segment of the pre-owned superyacht market. Benetti, founded in Viareggio in 1873, is one of the oldest yacht builders in continuous operation and has delivered over 350 superyachts. The brand is known for semi-custom production builds in the 37–90 m range, offering a balance of Italian design, industrial build consistency, and relatively predictable operating costs compared to full-custom yachts. This guide covers the Benetti model range, build quality, common issues in used vessels, and the refit protocol for a pre-owned Benetti superyacht.
The Benetti superyacht range
Benetti's production is organised into several model lines, each targeting a specific size and style segment:
- Benetti Classic: A line of 37 m (121 ft) semi-displacement yachts produced from the early 2000s onward. The Classic 37 and Classic 37M are among the most common used Benetti superyachts on the market, typically priced between €8M and €14M depending on year and condition.
- Benetti Vision: A 45 m (147 ft) displacement yacht line, produced from 2004. The Vision series offers larger interior volume and a full-displacement hull for extended range. Used prices range from €15M to €25M.
- Oasis Deck series: A newer line introduced in 2020, designed by RWD. The Oasis 34M and Oasis 40M feature expansive beach-club stern areas and a modern interior. As a recent design, used examples are limited but entering the resale market from approximately €18M.
- Benetti Mega Yachts (50 m+): Custom and semi-custom builds from 50 to 90 m, including the FB series and giga-yacht projects. These are rare on the used market and typically priced above €30M.
Build quality and hull construction
Benetti builds with three hull materials depending on the model line: fiberglass (GRP) for the 37 m and below range, steel for the 45 m+ displacement yachts, and aluminium for select semi-displacement models. The fiberglass production line in Viareggio uses vacuum-infusion lamination, which produces consistent hull thickness and reduces the risk of osmosis compared to hand-laid layup. The steel-hulled displacement yachts are built at the Livorno facility.
For used Benetti superyachts, the hull material affects the survey protocol. Fiberglass hulls require moisture mapping and tap testing. Steel hulls require ultrasonic thickness measurement to detect corrosion, particularly in the bilge areas and around the stern tube.
Common issues in used Benetti superyachts
Based on survey reports and broker feedback, several issues recur in used Benetti vessels, particularly those 10–20 years old:
- Teak deck replacement: Teak decking on Benetti yachts from the early 2000s typically requires replacement after 12–15 years. A full teak refit on a 37 m yacht costs €150,000–€300,000 depending on the teak grade and labour market.
- Generator hours: Benetti superyachts run generators nearly continuously when in use. Vessels with 10,000+ generator hours may need replacement or major overhaul. Check the hour logs for all generators.
- Stabiliser systems: Many Benetti yachts are equipped with Zero Speed stabilisers (typically Wesmar or Quantum). The hydraulic cylinders and fins require periodic resealing. Verify the service history of the stabiliser system.
- Air conditioning compressors: The chilled-water air conditioning system on a 37 m yacht has multiple compressors that may need replacement after 10–15 years of saltwater cooling-loop exposure.
- Paint and gelcoat: Fiberglass Benetti yachts may show gelcoat crazing or oxidation after 10+ years in the Mediterranean sun. A hull repaint (Awlgrip or similar) costs €80,000–€150,000 for a 37 m yacht.
The refit protocol for a used Benetti
Buyers of used Benetti superyachts should plan for a post-purchase refit, particularly for vessels over 10 years old. A typical refit scope includes:
- Hull work: Haul-out, pressure wash, hull inspection, antifouling, and anode replacement. For steel hulls, add ultrasonic thickness testing and any required plate renewal.
- Engine and generator service: Full engine service per manufacturer schedule, generator overhaul or replacement, and cooling-system descaling.
- Systems upgrade: Navigation electronics (chartplotter, radar, AIS) may need updating to current standards. Check compatibility with current ECDIS requirements if the yacht is commercially registered.
- Interior refresh: Soft furnishings, headliners, and exterior canvas are typically refreshed during a refit.
- Class and flag renewal: If the yacht carries RINA or Lloyd's class, schedule the special survey (renewal) during the refit to combine downtime.
