A boat hull is the underwater structure that determines how a vessel moves through the water, how stable it is at rest and underway, and how efficiently it uses fuel. The three principal hull types are displacement, semi-displacement, and planing, each representing a different approach to managing hydrodynamic drag. Hull shape — whether flat-bottomed, round-bottomed, or V-shaped — further refines how the boat behaves in calm water and in chop. Construction material, typically GRP, steel, or aluminum, affects weight, durability, and maintenance requirements. Displacement, semi-displacement, and planing hulls

A displacement hull pushes water aside as it moves, never exceeding its hull speed — a function of waterline length. A planing hull, by contrast, generates enough lift at speed to rise above the water's surface, reducing drag and allowing higher speeds. Hull shapes and construction materials

Within each hull type, the cross-sectional shape influences ride quality. A deep-V hull cuts through waves smoothly, providing a comfortable ride in rough conditions but requiring more power to plane. A flat-bottom hull is stable at rest and efficient at low speeds but delivers a harsh ride in chop. A round-bottom hull, typical of sailboats, moves efficiently through the water but is less stable at rest. Construction materials also matter: GRP (fiberglass) is the most common, offering low maintenance and good strength-to-weight ratio; steel is used on larger displacement vessels for durability and collision resistance; aluminum is favored for high-performance and expedition boats for its lightness. A pre-purchase survey should assess the hull's condition, including moisture content in GRP laminates and corrosion in metal hulls, before any purchase is finalized.
