What affects the price?
Season
Peak season (July–August in the Mediterranean) is 30 to 50 percent more expensive than shoulder season (May–June, September–October). If your dates are flexible, renting in shoulder season saves significantly and the weather is still pleasant.
Location
Popular destinations command higher prices. Mallorca, Amalfi, and Mykonos are among the most expensive. Croatia, Greece (outside Mykonos/Santorini), and Turkey offer better value. See our European destinations guide for price comparisons by location.
Boat age and condition
Newer boats and recently refitted boats cost more. A 2023 sailboat rents for 20 to 40 percent more than a 2015 model of the same size.
Hidden costs to budget for
- Fuel: Often not included. Motorboats burn €50–€200 per day depending on usage. Sailboats use minimal fuel (€10–€30/day).
- Captain: €150–€300 per day if you need a skipper.
- Crew (steward, chef): €100–€250 per person per day.
- Security deposit: €1,000–€5,000, refunded if the boat is returned undamaged.
- Cleaning fee: €50–€150, sometimes included.
- Transit log / cruising tax: €50–€200 in some countries (Croatia, Greece).
- Marina fees at stops: €30–€150 per night if you dock at marinas overnight.
- Water toys: Paddleboards, jet skis, and inflatables may cost extra (€50–€200 per item).
