How to Inspect a Used Boat Before Buying

Inspecting a used boat is the single most important step in the buying process. A boat that looks great in photos can hide thousands of euros in problems — osmosis in the hull, water in the engine, delamination in the deck. This checklist walks you through every system to check, what to look for, and when to call in a professional.

Find boats to inspect

Before you go: what to bring

  • A small plastic mallet or tack hammer (for tapping the hull)
  • A flashlight (for engine room and bilge inspection)
  • A multimeter (for testing electrical systems)
  • A camera or phone (document everything)
  • A notepad (write down issues as you find them)
  • A friend who knows boats (a second set of eyes is invaluable)

1. Hull and deck inspection

The hull is the boat's foundation. Every other system can be replaced, but a bad hull is a deal-breaker.

What to check

  • Stress cracks — small hairline cracks near stress points (cleats, stanchion bases, chainplates) are normal. Large cracks radiating from a single point or cracks wider than 1mm are red flags.
  • Osmosis (blisters) — look for small blisters on the hull below the waterline. Press on them — if they're soft or weep fluid, the hull has moisture intrusion. Minor osmosis is treatable; extensive osmosis is expensive (€5,000–€15,000 to fix).
  • Tap test — tap the hull with the plastic mallet in a grid pattern. A sharp, clear sound means solid laminate. A dull, hollow sound indicates delamination — the layers of fiberglass are separating. This is a serious structural issue.
  • Deck soft spots — walk the entire deck, pressing firmly with your feet. Soft or spongy areas indicate core rot, often from water intrusion through deck fittings.
  • Gelcoat condition — check for fading, chalking, and repair marks. A freshly painted hull can be hiding previous damage. Look for color mismatches that suggest repairs.
  • Through-hull fittings — check every through-hull (speed, depth, raw water intake, drain). Look for corrosion, loose fittings, and missing seacocks. A failed through-hull can sink a boat.

2. Engine inspection

The engine is the second most expensive system on a boat (after the hull). Engine problems can cost €10,000–€80,000 to fix, so inspect carefully.

What to check

  • Oil — pull the dipstick. Oil should be dark amber or black (normal). Milky or creamy oil means water intrusion — a sign of a blown head gasket or cracked block. Walk away.
  • Coolant — check the coolant reservoir. It should be clean and at the right level. Oil in the coolant means the same problem as milky oil.
  • Belts — check for cracks, fraying, and tension. A cracked belt is a €50 part, but it tells you about maintenance habits.
  • Exhaust — start the engine and watch the exhaust. Blue smoke = burning oil. White smoke = coolant leak. Black smoke = over-fueling. A small puff at startup is normal; continuous smoke is a problem.
  • Engine hours — check the hour meter. Compare it to the seller's claims. Under 500 hours is low, 500–1,500 is normal, over 3,000 is high for a diesel.
  • Service records — ask for them. An engine with 1,200 hours and documented service is worth more than one with 600 hours and no records.
  • Seawater pump and impeller — check for leaks around the raw water pump. A failed impeller is cheap to fix but can cause overheating if ignored.
  • Engine mounts — look for cracked or corroded mounts. Loose mounts cause vibration and drive misalignment.

3. Electronics and electrical

Marine electronics are expensive to replace and critical for safety. Test every system.

What to check

  • Chartplotter / GPS — power it on. Does it boot quickly? Are the charts up to date? Does it have the latest firmware?
  • VHF radio — do a radio check. Is it DSC-capable? Is the MMSI programmed?
  • Autopilot — engage it and verify it holds a heading. Autopilot failure is common and expensive (€3,000–€8,000).
  • Depth sounder and speed log — check that they display readings. Failed transducers are common.
  • Bilge pump — test manual and automatic modes. Lift the float switch and confirm the pump runs.
  • Navigation lights — test all of them: port, starboard, stern, masthead, anchor. Corroded sockets are common.
  • Battery condition — check battery age, voltage, and connections. Corroded terminals and old batteries (3+ years) should be replaced.
  • Shore power — if the boat has shore power, test the battery charger and AC outlets. Look for corroded shore power inlets.

4. Sails and rigging (for sailing boats)

If you're buying a sailboat, the sails and rigging are a major expense. A new mainsail and genoa can cost €5,000–€15,000. Standing rigging replacement is €3,000–€10,000.

What to check

  • Sail condition — inspect for tears, UV damage (especially on the leech and foot), and stitching integrity. Hold the sail up to the light — thin spots are signs of wear.
  • Sail age — ask when the sails were last replaced or serviced. Sails older than 10 years are near end of life.
  • Standing rigging — inspect wire for broken strands ("fish hooks"), corrosion at terminals, and loose turnbuckles. Rigging older than 10–15 years should be replaced regardless of appearance.
  • Running rigging — check halyards and sheets for chafe, especially at mast exits and blocks. Pull each line through its blocks to check for smooth operation.
  • Mast and boom — look for corrosion, dents, and cracks, especially at the mast base and spreader roots.
  • Winches — spin each winch. They should turn smoothly without grinding. Service kits are cheap but neglected winches need rebuilding.

5. Interior

  • Water stains — check the cabin ceiling for brown streaks, especially around deck fittings and portlights. Leaks are common and can cause core rot in the deck.
  • Mildew smell — a musty smell means moisture problems. Open every locker and hatch.
  • Upholstery — check for UV damage, tears, and mold. Replacing cushions costs €1,000–€4,000.
  • Head (toilet) — flush it. Check for leaks and odors. A malfunctioning head is common and unpleasant.
  • Water system — run the water pump. Check for leaks under sinks and at the tank.
  • Stove — test the stove (gas or alcohol). Check gas lines for leaks with soapy water.

6. Trailer (if included)

A boat trailer can be worth €2,000–€8,000 — or it can be a rust bucket that costs more than the boat to fix.

  • Tires — check tread, age (DOT code), and pressure. Trailer tires age out before they wear out — replace if over 6 years old.
  • Wheel bearings — jack up each wheel and spin it. Grinding or roughness means the bearings need repacking or replacement.
  • Lights — test all lights with the tow vehicle connected.
  • Brakes — if the trailer has brakes, test them. Surge brakes are common on boat trailers — check the actuator for corrosion.
  • Frame — inspect for rust, cracks, and weld repairs. Surface rust is normal; structural rust is a problem.

When to hire a surveyor

If the boat is worth more than €30,000, hire a professional surveyor. A survey costs €400–€800 for a 30–40 foot boat, and it can save you tens of thousands.

A surveyor will:

  • Perform a comprehensive hull inspection, including moisture meter
  • Test all systems and document deficiencies
  • Provide a written report with fair market valuation
  • Identify safety issues that need addressing
  • Give you a negotiation tool — every deficiency is a price reduction

Most insurance companies require a survey for boats over 10 years old or valued above €50,000. Even if they don't, get one. The survey report is also useful for insurance underwriting.

For larger boats (over 50 feet / 15 meters) or complex motor yachts, consider a separate engine survey by a qualified marine mechanic (€300–€600). Engine surveys include compression tests, oil analysis, and a detailed assessment of the drivetrain.

Red flags — walk away

  • Milky oil or oil in the coolant — engine is done
  • Extensive osmosis with soft blisters — €10,000+ repair
  • Delamination found in the tap test — structural failure
  • Soft deck with widespread core rot — €5,000–€15,000 to fix
  • No documentation — no title, no service records, no registration
  • Seller won't let you start the engine or do a sea trial
  • Price dramatically below market — if it seems too good, it is
  • Fresh paint over the hull — could be hiding previous damage

Boat inspection checklist (print this)

  • Through-hulls: corrosion, seacocks, condition
  • Engine: oil, coolant, belts, exhaust smoke, hours, service records
  • Electronics: chartplotter, VHF, autopilot, depth, lights

  • Sails (if applicable): age, tears, UV damage, stitching
  • Rigging (if applicable): broken strands, corrosion, turnbuckles
  • Interior: water stains, mildew, upholstery, head, water system
  • Trailer (if included): tires, bearings, lights, brakes, frame
  • Paperwork: title, registration, service log, insurance records
  • Sea trial: handling, vibration, steering, all systems under load
