How to Sell on Owning

Category: Selling Last updated: 2026-07-14

Selling on Owning is free and takes just a few minutes. This guide walks you through the entire process — from creating your listing to closing the deal with a buyer.

Create your listing

Go to owning.pro/sell to start the sell wizard. You'll go through a few quick steps:

  1. Upload photos — add at least one image. More photos mean more views.
  2. Generate a draft with AI (optional) — click "Generate with AI" and we'll fill in a title, description, category, price estimate, and condition from your photos.
  3. Fill in the details — title, category, price, condition, description, and location.
  4. Publish — your listing goes live after a quick moderation review, usually within minutes.

For the full step-by-step breakdown, see How to Create a Listing.

Take good photos

Photos sell your item. Listings with at least 3 photos get significantly more views and sell faster.

  • Use natural light — avoid flash when possible.
  • Shoot against a clean background — no clutter.
  • Show multiple angles — front, back, sides, and close-ups of any defects.
  • Be honest — don't filter or over-edit. Show the item in its real state.
  • Include brand labels or model numbers in at least one shot.

We accept JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, and HEIC up to 10 MB each.

Write an effective description

A good description answers the buyer's questions before they ask them, which means fewer messages and faster sales.

  • Be specific: brand, model, size, year, color, and relevant specs.
  • Be honest about condition: mention scratches, dents, or wear. Buyers appreciate transparency.
  • Explain what's included: original box, charger, accessories, manuals?
  • State your terms: is the price firm or negotiable? Local pickup only or shipping available?
  • Keep it readable: short paragraphs or bullet points. Avoid walls of text.

Generic, copy-pasted descriptions look like spam and get fewer views. Write something specific to your item.

Set the right price

Pricing right means selling faster. Here's a practical approach:

  1. Search Owning for similar items — filter by the same category and condition to see what others are asking.
  2. Check the original retail price — used items typically sell for 40–70% of retail, depending on condition and age.
  3. Factor in condition: "Like New" can be priced close to retail. "Fair" or "Poor" should be significantly lower.
  4. Consider demand: popular brands and models sell faster and can command higher prices.
  5. Leave room to negotiate — many buyers expect to haggle. Price slightly above your floor if you're open to offers.

You can also mark your price as "negotiable" when creating the listing to signal openness to offers.

Manage inquiries

Once your listing is live, buyers may contact you through the "Contact seller" button. Here's how to handle messages effectively:

  • Respond quickly. Buyers often message multiple sellers. The first to reply usually wins.
  • Answer questions directly. If a buyer asks for more photos, send them. If they ask about shipping, give a clear answer.
  • Keep communication on Owning. Use the in-platform messaging rather than sharing personal contact info upfront.
  • Be honest. If the item has a defect the buyer asks about, tell them. Hiding issues leads to disputes and bad experiences.
  • Watch for red flags. Be wary of buyers who offer to pay more than your asking price and ask you to refund the difference — this is a common scam pattern. See Safety Tips for more.

Close the deal

When a buyer is ready to purchase, agree on the details before the exchange:

  • Payment method: cash on pickup, bank transfer, or PayPal Goods & Services. Avoid wire transfers or crypto to unknown parties.
  • Delivery: local pickup in a public place, or tracked shipping with a secure payment method.
  • Confirm the price: make sure you both agree on the final amount, especially if you negotiated.

For in-person exchanges, meet in a public place — a coffee shop, shopping mall, or police station parking lot. Inspect the item together and complete the payment on the spot.

For shipping, wait for payment confirmation before sending the item. Use tracked shipping and keep the tracking number.

After the sale

Once the item is sold:

  1. Mark the listing as sold from your dashboard. The listing stays visible (marked as sold) so other buyers know it's no longer available.
  2. Delete the listing if you prefer to remove it entirely.

Listings stay active for 30 days by default. You can renew them if they haven't sold.
